The 4C's Diamond Colour

Colour refers to the natural tint inherent in white diamonds. In nature, most white diamonds have a slight tint of yellow. The closer to being ‘colourless’ a diamond is, the rarer it is. The industry standard for grading colour is to evaluate each stone and assign a letter grade from “D” (colourless) to “Z” (light yellow).

Diamond clarity is a measure of the purity and rarity of the stone. Carat denotes the weight of a diamond, not the size. Unrivalled Fine Jewellery measures diamonds to 1/1000th of a carat; one carat equals .20 grams. Unrivalled diamonds are always cut to maximize beauty, not carat weight. It’s important to note that carat weight does not determine the size of a diamond. Since diamonds can be shaped a number of ways, the weight will show itself differently across different shapes. This means that a Radiant cut diamond and a Round cut diamond that both weigh 1 carat will have different measurements in millimetres.

Laboratory-grown diamonds have the same chemical, optical, and physical properties as natural diamonds. Like natural diamonds, they are made of tightly-bonded carbon atoms; meaning the chemical makeup is the exact same.
The difference being that a Lab Diamond is simply formed/ grown in a laboratory over a few months, versus a natural mined diamond which is found and formed deep within the Earths mantle over billions of years.

Moissanite is a popular and affordable diamond alternative. Naturally-occurring Moissanite is incredibly rare and therefore, all Moissanite used in jewellery today is lab-grown.
Moissanite is made by combining silicon and carbon under immense amounts of heat and pressure to create silicon carbide crystals.
Moissanite is an excellent diamond simulant. To the untrained eye, they look almost identical. Side by side, Moissanite actually has even more fire than natural diamonds. Therefore, Moissanite tends to have more coloured flashes of light than diamond. This is because a moissanite has a higher refractive index than a diamond and is a double-refractive gemstone, which results in a more sparkly gemstone.
